Many modern or contemporary water features have a style that reflects a sense of order.  Repeating geometric shapes, straight lines and intentional angles make up designs that have a more modern feel than natural rock.   A contemporary water feature can be as simple as a portable fountain, or as coplex as a built in tile fountain.  

Contemporary Koi Ponds

Traditional Koi Ponds tend to be surrounded by natural rock and plants, reflecting the natural environment and setting.   However many people prefer the styel of a contemporary Koi Pond.  Concrete bottom, clean edges and geometric shapes make up these types of designs.  People are attracted to the clean look and feel.  Some of these modern water features tend to look more like a swimming pool, with modern design aspects tied into the overall landscape design.  A Contemporary Koi Pond can be the focal point within a more contemporary landscape design, or a carefully placed highlight to a garden design.

Modern Garden Fountains

Many poeple considering a water feature prefer to have a more carefully designed and geometrically shaped feature rather than a natural and free-flowing design.  This may be created to match the architecture of the house or to bring about a particular theme within the garden.   Many of the landscapes in San Diego County are specifically designed to be water wise.  In these cases, a water feature that is designed to reuse the same water is very important.  Within a water-wise landscape, a carefully placed fountain or water feature can greatly enhance the overall appeal, and bring water into an otherwise desert landscape.

Alternatives to Natural Water Features

While some may enjoy the sounds that a water feature brings to the garden, others prefer silence and a beautiful reflecting pool.  A concrete lined reflecting pool brings the colors of the sky and surrounding foliage into a new dimension.   Placing a fountain within a shallow pool gives you the best of both worlds, with a trickling water feature when desired, or a peaceful reflecting pool.
