Pond Construction Preparation
First an excavator and bobcat were used to dig out the bulk of the dirt for a 20 by 30 foot pond with a depth of 3 ½ feet. We were able to use most of the dirt behind the pond to build up the elevation needed for a 30 foot long stream starting about 4 feet high. Shovels were then used to fine tune the steps in the pond and stream.
Installing the PondLiner
After the pond liner and underlayment were installed we stacked 1 – 2 foot boulders along all vertical walls in pond. All boulders are glued in place to make sure nothing moves over time. All flat areas and holes between boulders are covered with small river rock covering the liner completely.
Natural Pond Filtration
In stream area flat boulders are used to create cascades. Behind these boulders the water is allowed to slow down to form shallow pooling areas.
At top of stream water overflows out of a large basin filled with layers of lava rock. This filter will keep the pond naturally clean and the fish healthy.
The pond is filled with approximately 8,000 gallons of water. The system is then turned on for the first time.
Custom Colored Concrete Pour
We then poured sandstone colored concrete with a subtle stamped texture around entire patio and pond area. A seating wall and a fire pit were also built next to the pond.
Custom Gazebo
After completion of the hardscape we also added a gazebo made of solid cedar with a clay tile roof.
Drip Irrigation Installation
A drip irrigation system was installed in the planting area then an assortment of plants and trees were placed. Koi fish were added to the pond to complete this landscape project.
Custom Lighting
The proper use of lighting can make or break your water feature. Proper lighting can make your landscape and water feature have an entirely new life once the sun goes down.
